About Nalani Oda:
- Where I live: San Francisco, CA
- Where I'm from: Honolulu, HI
Sport interests: Kitesurfing, bouldering (rock climbing), hiking...wakeboarding if I had friends with boats!
How I got started in my sport: I had never heard of kitesurfing when fate sat me next to a Cabrinha kite designer on a flight to Hawaii in 2002. He talked up the sport for hours, showed me pictures, and gave a number to call for lessons. The next day I called for a lesson, and got hooked instantly.
Athletic achievements:
-
Maui Kite Festival (1st contest): 1st place, amateur div. / 2nd place, pro div.
-
Rotto Wave Contest (Australia): 3rd place women's pro div.
-
King of the Bay (San Francisco): 4th place women's pro div.
Athletic goals: To get better at unhooked wakestyle tricks, and to get in lots of waveriding time
Inspiration: talented kiters who let their kiting speak for itself
Philosophy: If my kite stayed dry during a session, I didn't learn anything new. Gotta push at the edge of your comfort zone in order to learn new things. And learning new things is what makes life exciting.
Favorite spot to do my sport: Favorite wave spot -Mokuleia, Hawaii. Favorite flat spot - Coche island, Venezuela.
Favorite Girls4Sport wear: Long Board Shorts - Love them! They are super comfortable and just the right length so that they don't ride up and don't get stuck on your knees.
What I do when I'm not in the water: Study, study, study. Dental school is a full time job. When I can get away I like to rock climb or camp
My job: Dental School
Education: Dental School
Interesting/unusual facts about me: I've lived in Hawaii, Colorado, Alaska, Japan, Texas, and California. After graduation I hope to live in South America...for a little while. "I just want to say thanks to all the people who have made my adventures possible. Whether it was sponsorship, gear, a couch to sleep on, or kiting buddies in random corners of the world - you have made my life more interesting and fulfilling then I ever expected. Hopefully someday I can return the favor. Mahalo nui loa."
