Big wave surfer, Jamilah Star

Jamilah Star

Big wave rider Jamilah Star has been surfing since she was five. She was featured on the cover of Surf Life for Women charging a 25-foot wave and has racked up numerous awards, including the 2004/2005 Billabong XXL Big Wave Award in which she was the first female recipient. Below is an interview with Jamilah:

Where are you from?
I grew up on the West Side and Midtown of Santa Cruz, California. I started traveling to Hawaii to surf at age six with my dad. I always thought the water in Santa Cruz was warm and I never used to wear a wet suit. Just booties and my bikini. After living in Costa Rica and Tahiti, I realized the water temp was amazingly fresh.

Where do you live now?
Now I live on the North Shore of Oahu near my team of big wave riders and musicians: "The JamStar International Team."

You started surfing at the age of five, but you’ve pursued a variety of other interests, too. Tell us about those.
I always played sports in school. Wrestling and water polo were my priorities. By the time I was a freshman at my junior college I had traveled to 16 countries. I was playing basketball for my college team a missed a great swell. I realized surfing was my dream so I had to follow it. Also at that time I was working on a book, teaching Junior lifeguards, and surfing. I left school and began studying on my own as I traveled. My favorite subjects are physics and language. I speak and write Spanish and am learning to speak Portuguese.

What goals do you have?
I have a lot of goals with everything I do. I mostly surf and train for big waves. I also sing and am working on recording a new CD. I realized with goals no matter how many you accomplish you always want something more. So I have categories of goals: spiritual, mental, surfing, and team goals. Here are the first of each:

  1. Love and live for god.
  2. Learn and practice mastery of the mind.
  3. Catch a wave with a 120-foot face.
  4. Let my body represent a perfect temple for overall growth and health.
  5. Create a tour of women who ride big waves.

How did get started with surfing? What was your inspiration?
My dad surfed, so I started swimming out to him when I was little. Finally he got me a 9-0 CA Classic to use when I was five. I stood up for the first time and never stopped. I love him and my mom so much. My mom is in heaven and my dad is young and surfs every day at Steamers Lane.

Who are you role models?
God, Jesus, Mother Mary, Buddha, Dali Lama, Bob Marley, Beth Pitts, Jay Moriarty, Malik, and many more.
